I was sitting at a bus stop, waiting for a bus, near the University of Arizona, talking to a friend on the evening of December 8, 1980. Another friend came up and asked, "Did you hear about John Lennon?" We both replied, "Yeh, he's got a new album out. It's pretty good." The reply was, "No, he was just shot and killed." 😮
I hate how they used to just put the network logo on the screen and then a monotone voice would make the announcement. Creepy.
I have stated my experience in seeing this announcement, watching Johnny Carson's monologue with my girlfriend, 23 & happy when this bucket of Arctic Ocean water was dumped on our souls. I'm telling it over & over because it is becoming more apparent to me that I am aging even faster than I did that day we sat there in our seats, not moving, staring at the screen for hours. I'm 63 now, and I want to share the irreparable feeling of losing ANY bit of innocence is; Beatles didn't die, they sure as HELL didn't get murdered, and madness was just a funky ska band. The way it felt was best portrayed (accidentally) in the movie "Fisher King" when Jeff Bridges' fat 'n' sassy character hears on TV about a horrific crime, a crime he may have caused unintentionally but irresponsibly. That look on Bridges' face—that was it, he nailed it. I don't want to appear ghoulish here, I just want to carry on with the campaign against murder. It's not just a pebble hitting the water's surface; it always, ALWAYS causes ripples. The bigger the rock, the further they go.

I had been studying for a test on Tuesday Dec 9-1980–I decided to watch the end of the MNF game (Patriots/Dolphins)–and I heard Howard Cosell make the announcement–I was stunned-I fliipped to NBC where the Tonight show was on (it was a tape of a previous show as Johnny Carson had it in his contract that he only worked 4 days a week)–and I heard this bulletin that Mr. Lennon had been killed–just overwhelming sense of sadness
I remember laying in bed watching that very episode of The Tonight Show when they broke in with this.
I heard about it in the morning on channel 5. This is the first time I'm hearing the actual report.
I remember this being shown for the 25th anniversary of Lennon's death. This aired while The Tonight Show was being aired. It interrupted Johnny Carson in mid sentence.

I wish they would announce special reports like this but times have changed. The countdowns they use help but still I wish they didn't have loud music but they want you're attention.
